Miles Morales Ultimate Spider-Man Poster

Ultimate Spider-Man Movie Poster

My goal is for people to be excited for this movie and want to watch it when they see the poster. To do this I made the poster in a very iconic spiderman pose and the skyline of New York so people know where the movie takes place. I also included the Avengers tower, which is to give reward for those with a keen eye so they will relate it to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and know it is connected with that storyline.
Techniques Used

Technique #1 – selections and masking
For the selection techniques I used a lot of different techniques for different purposes. For the skyline to change the clouds I used the quick selection tool and then converted it to a layer mask to make sure I had gotten the edges clean. I used the same techniques for the avengers tower so I could put it in the background. For the spiderman character I decided to use screenshots from the Spider-Man PS4 video game and because the suit I was using isn’t actually in the game I combined parts of 2 different suits to make it look like it was a single suit and the suit I was trying to achieve. For that I used the select subject tool and used the layer mask to hide the parts that I didn’t need. I also feathered the merging edges so that there was no clear seam between the two suits.
Every time I did a selection, I made sure to apply it to a layer mask as it would preserve the original image. I also used it to feather the edges on some selections to make the merge between two selections easier.

Technique #2 – adjustment layers
For adjustment layers I did a few levels adjustments to make the different parts look more natural. I also used a hue adjustment to change the color of the clouds in the background because my original had pink clouds but I just wanted to use that pattern, and didn’t really like the color. Most of my adjustment layers are clipping masks so I would only affect layers in that group or the layer itself.

Technique #3 – typography
What typographic principles did you use and why? When making the typography, I wanted to have a mix of an MCU poster look and a comic book look  from the ultimate spiderman series. I found a font I liked that I could use for the Spider-Man text and found a tutorial on how to make the text look like an MCU style. I followed the tutorial, keeping all the text in a group and switch textures to a metal look that I thought would fit better. (Here is the tutorial on MCU text that I used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rBUwVrjlyPk&t=1044s )
